Print and Program Resources
This bibliography is suggestive, not exhaustive. Several campus ministers/chaplains suggested titles and provided information. Hopefully all information is accurate, but it has not been
double-checked. Numbers following any entry are ISBN numbers, unless there is LC, which denotes Library of Congress numbers. They are provided on some, but not all entries to help locate resources. Some items are listed as out of print and others may be. Alden, Betsy and Helen Neinast. Church and Campus Calling: A Collection of Resources for Ministries in Higher Education. Religion on Campus .The University of North Carolina Press, 2001. A recently published study of campus religious culture provides new evidence of a renewed religious/spiritual vitality on college campuses. Religion on Campus (The University of North Carolina Press, 2001) reports the findings of in-depth ethnographic analysis (case studies) of four diverse institutions: "North" (a Lutheran college), "East" (a Catholic university), "South" (a Presbyterian HBCU), and "West" (a public research university). Researchers Conrad Cherry, Betty DeBerg, and Amanda Porterfield examined campus religious life, the teaching of religion, and campus ethos. As a result of their empirical study, the researchers found that in comparison to previous eras, religion on campus today is more optional and at the same time more pluralistic. They do, however, challenge recent assertions (Marsden, Burtchaell, Sloan, and others) that higher education has experienced a steady trend toward secularization. In fact, they offer a rather astonishing conclusion: "Indeed, we found religion on the four campuses sufficiently vital and inviting to make us wonder if it had ever been more so in the past. It is possible that young people in American culture have never been more enthusiastically engaged in religious practice or with religious ideas. And it is possible that religious practice and education have never been more connected with personal responsibility for society. More clearly, our study reveals that the ethos of decentered, diverse, religiously tolerant institutions of higher education is a breeding ground for vital religious practice and teaching." (pp. 294-5) The February 13-20 issue of Christian Century carried a review and critique of this study by Jennifer Copeland at Duke. She asserts: "Churches, synagogues, mosques or other faith communities will find more fertile ground on college campuses than in the suburban neighborhoods where they routinely sow mass mailings. Any church leader who questions the validity of a religious presence on college campuses should read this book and reassess that notion."
